Detroit, MI is set to become the latest city to file a suit against drug makers for their role in the nation’s ongoing opioid epidemic. Citing deceptive marketing and sales practices, the Detroit City Council has approved funding to hire two law firms to represent the city as they prepare to sue opioid drug makers and distributors they say are responsible for the addiction and overdose crisis.
The council claims that the proliferation of opioids has led to increased medical and substance abuse treatment costs. In October, Michigan’s Oakland and Wayne counties announced that they planned to file a joint lawsuit against 12 big opioid manufacturers and distributors who violated the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.
