Following a drug overdose in October 2015, Lamar Odom was on death’s door. The former NBA Sixth Man of the Year and two-time NBA champion overdosed on a combination of cocaine, pills and other drugs while partying in a Nevada brothel, sending him into a brief coma. Less than two years later, following 35 days of inpatient addiction treatment, it appears that Odom is making significant progress towards a full addiction recovery.
In the days and weeks after Odom’s 2015 overdose, things were looking grim. He suffered 12 strokes, was dealing with kidney failure and was unable to walk or speak. His recovery is considered nothing short of miraculous. His life had spiraled completely out of control in the months leading up to his overdose.
“I wasn’t in a good place mentally before that incident happened,”he said on “The Doctors,”a television show that tracked his journey through rehab. “… I was basically committing suicide.”
Odom now has set his sights on trying to win back his ex-wife, Khloe Kardashian, and rebuilding his health to the point where he can live independently and potentially play basketball again.
The former all-star says that he has “conquered”treatment and that he “wants to get high off of life now.”Only time will tell how much of a changed man Odom is, but his progress in addiction recovery and improved health are encouraging.
